1. Will You Get Your Driving Licence Without 100 hours of Supervised Driving in Queensland?
No, you won’t get your provisional driving licence without 100 hours of supervised driving on Australian roads if you are under 25 years old.
- Among these supervised driving hours, 10 hours must be in the night—the night hours range from sunset to sunrise.
- You must record the driving hours in your learner driver logbook.
You must submit your logbook to the Department of Transport and Main Roads in Queensland after hours are completed. If they approve your logbook, you can only sit for the P1 licence’s practical driving test.
However,
But the transport authority recommends that you complete 100 hours of supervised driving. This will help you acquire enough driving experience before taking the practical driving test.
Learner Logbook Exemption
Though you need to complete the 100 hours of supervised driving, in some cases, you are exempt from the rule. You will benefit from the learner driver exemptions when you meet the following circumstances.
Unavailability of Car
If no car is available to allow you to complete 100 hours of supervised driving, you are exempt from the logbook record. But you must prove that you don’t have access. You must do so by a statement confirming by a supporting person of your family member, guardian, or carer.
However,
- if you think that you don’t like to drive a manual/or automatic car and
- you avoid the driving hours only for this reason,
This will not be considered for the exemption.
The Supervisor Isn’t Available
If you don’t have access to a licenced and trained supervisor, there are exemptions for the logbook record. But, this must be proved in the same way as the car's unavailability.
Limited Access to a Road Network
If you live in an area that doesn’t have enough access for you to complete the hours, you are exempted. The road area may be something that is not beneficial for driving. This will also exempt you from the logbook record requirement.
Other Primary Requirements for P1 Licence Eligibility
Along with the 100 hours of supervised driving in Queensland, you need to fulfil the following requirements for P1 licence eligibility.
- You must be 17 years or older.
- You must have held the learner licence for a minimum of 1 year. This time counts within 5 years when you first apply for the P1 licence.
- You must pass the hazard perception test. There is no hazard perception test exemption regardless of the age of the driver.
The Formats of Learner Logbook You Can Use
You can utilise two types of logbook format-
Learner Logbook App
You can use the learner logbook app to record your supervised driving trips online. This app is available for both Android and iOS.
Paper logbook.
Aside from the app, you can use a paper logbook for your supervised driving record. You must visit one of the Transport and Motoring Service Centres to collect your paper logbook.
2. How Structured Driving Lessons Can Reduce the Hours
Your driving supervisor must be an accredited driver trainer. You will get a precise learner logbook hours bonus when driving under an accredited driver trainer.
Get a 1-Hour Driving Lesson Equals 3 Hours Logbook Record
When you drive under the supervision of an accredited driver trainer, you will get a 1-hour drive equal to a 3-hour logbook record.
- By the way, you will get this bonus for up to 10 actual hours.
- That means your supervised driving for 10 actual hours will be recorded in your learner logbook as 30 hours.
The rest of the hours must be the actual driving hours.
However, the bonus hours will not be added to the night hours. You can add the bonus only to your daytime driving.
For example,
- You drive after sunset for 1 hour.
- You can count this 1 hour as an actual 1 hour on the logbook for night driving.
- Or, you can count this 1 hour as 3 hours of daytime driving.
Other Benefits of Structured Driving Lessons
- Structured lessons have specific, measurable goals. They use the SMART method.
- The lessons cover many driving scenarios. These include urban and rural roads, roundabouts, junctions, merging, and pedestrian crossings. Also, they include emergency manoeuvres.
- Complex tasks are broken into simple steps. They have clear explanations and demos.
- Learners get guided practice and feedback to improve.
- Record keeping: Instructors track progress. They note strengths and areas for improvement.
- Lessons adjust to the learner's needs as their skills and comfort grow.
Things Required to Be Recorded on Learner Logbook
As a part of your logbook record, you must record the following things of your supervised driving record.
- Date of each driving trip
- Start and finish time of the trip
- The total number of minutes of each trip
- The location you start from and finish in
- The reading of the odometer when you start and when you finish the trip
- The number plate of the car
- The name of your supervisor and his/her contact details
- Mentioning if your supervisor is an accredited driver trainer.
3. Final Steps to Obtain a Provisional Licence
If you successfully complete your 100 hours of supervised driving in Queensland, you can proceed to sit for your provisional licence test. Here are the steps you need to go through to fulfil provisional driving test requirements.
Step 1- Complete Your Hazard Perception Test
Before attempting to submit your learner logbook, you have to pass the hazard perception test. Before taking the hazard perception test, you must have held your learner licence for a minimum of 6 months.
The Transport and Motoring Authority will send you an email if you are eligible to take the hazard perception test. As we mentioned earlier, there is no hazard perception test exemption.
Step 2- Submit Your Driving Logbook (If Applied)
After completing the 100 hours of supervised driving in Queensland, you need to submit your logbook to the transport authority. Please note that your supervisor must approve or sign each of your trips.
You can submit the logbook through the driving logbook app. If you used the paper logbook, you need to submit it through an Australia Post office. The Post Office will send the logbook to the transport authority.
The Transport Authority will take a minimum of 12 business days to check and approve your learner logbook. If they approve it, you can go for the next step- taking your practical driving licence test.
Note: If you are 25 or older, you don’t need to fulfil this step as you can directly apply for a P2 licence if you already held the learner licence for 1 year.
Step 3- Book Your Licence Test
After the authority approves your learner logbook, you can book and take your practical driving test. The test mainly known for learner drivers is the Q-SAFE practical driving test.
After you pay the fees and book the test, you can take your test on time. If you pass the driving test, the authority will provide you with a provisional licence (either P1 or P2, which you have applied for).
After getting the licence, you can use the Red P plate template for P1 and the Green P plate template for the P2 licence.
